Kevin Colantonio, a 36-year-old man from Rhode Island, is set to plead guilty on 7 January for igniting fires outside a predominantly Black church.
The fires were started at the Shiloh Gospel Temple in North Providence on 11 February, motivated by the “race, color, religion, national origin and/or ethnicity” of its congregants.
Colantonio was found with materials including a pocket lighter and gasoline, causing damage to the church property despite it being vacant at the time.
Evidence gathered from his home included disturbing writings that reflect violent intent against people who are not white.
He faces potential penalties of at least five years in prison, with a maximum possible sentence of 56 years, along with possible fines.
