  • Trump states Israel must decide on steps in Gaza following failed ceasefire talks.
  • He pledges additional US humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave.
  • Trump expresses concern over worsening hunger and hostages held by Hamas.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that Israel will need to determine its next steps regarding Gaza, as he expressed uncertainty about the outcome of the collapsed ceasefire and hostage-release negotiations with Hamas. He emphasized the urgency of securing the release of hostages, noting that Hamas has become more resistant to negotiations. "They don't want to give them back, and so Israel is going to have to make a decision," Trump said during a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at his resort in Turnberry, Scotland, according to Reuters, India Times, and Dawn.

In his remarks, Trump elaborated on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stating that the U.S. would increase its aid contributions amidst alarm over rising malnutrition rates. He pointed out that "we're giving a lot of money, a lot of food, a lot of everything," warning that without U.S. assistance, "people would have starved" in the enclave. Trump further criticized other nations for not contributing to relief efforts, implying that the U.S. bears significant responsibility alone, which he feels is not adequately acknowledged, according to Reuters, India Times, and Dawn.

Trump's demands come as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also indicated a shift towards "alternative" measures following the negotiations' breakdown and has started considering goals such as recovering hostages and dismantling Hamas's influence in Gaza. With the situation deteriorating into a humanitarian crisis, Trump and Netanyahu continue to explore strategies moving forward, with discussions expected to involve significant international leaders, as stated in Reuters, India Times, and Dawn.
