Brazil to Join South Africa’s ICJ Case Alleging Genocide by Israel

Credited from: MIDDLEEASTEYE

  • Brazil will formally join South Africa in its genocide case against Israel at the ICJ.
  • The intervention is based on allegations of severe human rights violations in Gaza.
  • Brazil’s government emphasizes the necessity for the international community to act.
  • Over 59,000 Palestinians have reportedly been killed in the ongoing conflict.

Brazil has announced that it is in the "final stages" of formally intervening in South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The Brazilian Foreign Ministry stated this move is based on "recurring episodes of violence" against Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, underscoring the "shameless use of starvation as a weapon of war." Brazil's decision reflects a growing insistence that the international community "cannot remain inactive" in light of what they term ongoing atrocities, according to Al Jazeera and Middle East Eye.

The legal proceedings were initiated by South Africa in December 2023, with the aim of declaring that Israel has violated the 1948 Genocide Convention amidst claims of extensive military actions indiscriminately affecting civilians, including strikes on schools and hospitals. Brazil joins other countries such as Spain, Turkey, and Colombia, who have also expressed intentions to take part in the case against Israel, as noted by TRT Global and Africanews.

Brazil's government has articulated its "deep indignation" over violence directed at the civilian population, including attacks on essential infrastructure and humanitarian aid delivery that have led to significant casualties. The Brazilian Foreign Ministry described the conflict as fueled by actions tantamount to genocide, emphasizing that failure to address these issues threatens to undermine international legality, according to Reuters and Anadolu Agency.

In light of the allegations, the Israeli embassy in Brazil contended that the country misrepresented the situation by ignoring the role of Hamas and dismissing Israel's claims that its operations aim solely at neutralizing this group. Despite these denials, the growing international scrutiny has put substantial pressure on Israel's military actions in Gaza, with casualties among Palestinians escalating significantly, as reported by Middle East Eye and Al Jazeera.
