Families in the United Kingdom have experienced immense distress after receiving the “wrong remains” of victims from the Air India crash last month, which resulted in the deaths of 260 individuals. Reports indicate that some relatives have learned that their loved ones' remains were misidentified before being repatriated to the UK, leading to additional heartbreak, according to Dawn and TRT World.
In multiple incidents, one family was compelled to abandon funeral plans after discovering that their coffin held the body of an unknown person instead of their deceased relative. Another family received “commingled” remains of multiple victims placed in the same casket, further compounding their grief, as reported by Indiatimes and Dawn.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has stated they are working closely with UK authorities to rectify these errors and restore dignity to the deceased. MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the identification process adhered to established protocols and that all remains were handled with utmost professionalism, as noted by TRT World and Dawn.
The tragedy occurred on June 12 when the aircraft crashed while attempting to take off from Ahmedabad for London's Gatwick airport. The flight included a diverse group of passengers, among them 169 Indian nationals and 53 British nationals, according to Indiatimes.
