A 4-year-old child was attacked by a collared mountain lion at Olympic National Park while walking with family near the Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge. Following the incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, the child was airlifted to a trauma center in Seattle for treatment. Park officials have not disclosed the child's identity, citing privacy concerns, but reports indicate that the child is in satisfactory condition and has since been released from the hospital according to ABC News and CBS News.
The attack was reported to rangers around 3:15 p.m. on Sunday, after which paramedics and park staff quickly responded. Rangers began searching for the mountain lion immediately and enlisted a canine team later that day. The animal was located and "dispatched" on Monday, which park officials describe as being killed. Officials confirmed there are “no current threats to the public” as the investigation continues regarding the incident, according to SFGATE and The Hill.
