On Monday morning, an Air India aircraft overshot the runway while landing at Mumbai International Airport amid heavy rain. The Airbus A320, operating flight AI-2744 from Kochi, skidded off the main Runway 27 and ran into an unpaved area before coming to a halt. Fortunately, all passengers and crew disembarked safely, with no reported injuries, according to Times of India and The Jakarta Post.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:27 AM, during which the aircraft failed to remain on the intended runway during deceleration. It was reported that three tires burst upon landing, and damage to the underside of one of the engines was observed, leading to the aircraft being grounded for further checks, as noted by The Jakarta Post and Times of India.
The Mumbai airport reported minor damages to its primary runway due to the event but activated a secondary runway to maintain operational continuity. Authorities, including a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), have initiated an investigation, emphasizing the safety of operations at the airport. This is not an isolated case, as several runway excursions have been reported at Mumbai airport over the years, especially during monsoon season, according to The Jakarta Post and Dawn.
