President Donald Trump has stated that he has not considered granting a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, the convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein. "It's something I haven't thought about," Trump told reporters when asked if he would pardon her, while also noting, "I'm allowed to do it" according to Reuters, HuffPost, and SCMP.
Despite Trump's comments, Maxwell's attorney, David Markus, has mentioned her willingness to "welcome any relief" from her 20-year prison sentence. She is currently appealing her conviction for sex trafficking and assisting Epstein in abusing underage girls. The attorney confirmed that Maxwell provided valuable information during interviews with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, including details about 100 individuals connected to Epstein, as reported by Newsweek and India Times.
Trump's political standing is increasingly complicated by ongoing scrutiny regarding his past associations with Epstein. He emphasized during his remarks that there is significant media focus on him rather than on other high-profile individuals potentially involved with Epstein, stating, "They talk about me. I have nothing to do with the guy," according to Reuters and Le Monde.
Amid growing tensions regarding the Justice Department's investigations, Trump was questioned about potential pardons for Maxwell following significant political outcry after the department reversed its decision to release further Epstein-related documents. Markus reiterated that there was no discussion of a pardon during Maxwell’s recent interviews, but noted the president has the authority to act, hoping he would "exercise that power in the right and just way," as stated in Newsweek and India Times.
