On July 20, Alaska Airlines requested a temporary ground stop for its entire fleet, including Horizon Air, after experiencing an IT outage. This incident began at approximately 8 p.m. Pacific Time and persisted for around three hours, according to Reuters, CBS News, and HuffPost.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that all destinations were impacted by the ground stop, which was lifted by 11 p.m. Pacific. The outage was attributed to a failure of a critical piece of multi-redundant hardware at a data center, as stated by SFGate and Newsweek.
Despite the resumption of operations, Alaska Airlines warned of ongoing flight disruptions, with over 150 cancellations reported since the outage began. The airline has encouraged passengers to check flight statuses before heading to the airport, according to India Times, Reuters, and HuffPost.
