  • A 61-year-old man was killed after being pulled into an MRI machine in New York.
  • The incident occurred due to a large metal chain he was wearing.
  • The man entered the MRI room while a scan was in progress, prompting an investigation.

A 61-year-old man died after being pulled into an MRI machine at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, New York, while wearing a heavy metal chain, according to Indiatimes and South China Morning Post. The incident occurred during an MRI scan when the chain, weighing approximately 20 pounds, was drawn into the machine's strong magnetic field.

Adrienne Jones-McAllister, the man's wife, reported that she was undergoing an MRI for her knee when she requested her husband, Keith, to assist her. Tragically, shortly after he entered the room, he was pulled into the machine. She recalled, “He waved goodbye to me and then his whole body went limp,” which was reported by The Hill, Los Angeles Times, and HuffPost.

The Nassau County Police Department confirmed that the man entered the MRI room during an active scan and consequently suffered fatal injuries due to the magnetic force of the machine. Emergency responders took him to a nearby hospital, where he died the following day, as reported by NPR and BBC.

Incidents involving MRI machines and metallic objects are rare but dangerous. According to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering, MRI machines exert forces strong enough to propel items like oxygen tanks or wheelchairs across the room, leading to potentially fatal injuries, as highlighted in multiple reports including The Hill and Los Angeles Times.
