NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has cautioned that nations such as Brazil, China, and India could face severe consequences from secondary US sanctions should they persist in conducting business with Russia. This warning was delivered during a meeting with US senators, following President Donald Trump's announcement of new military support for Ukraine and the potential imposition of "biting" tariffs of up to 100% on entities purchasing Russian exports unless a peace resolution is reached within 50 days, according to TRT Global and Reuters.
Rutte's remarks urged leaders from Brazil, China, and India to communicate with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that failure to engage seriously in peace discussions could have dire repercussions for their economies. He stated, "So please make the phone call to Vladimir Putin and tell him that he has to get serious about peace talks, because otherwise this will slam back on Brazil, on India and on China in a massive way," according to India Times and Anadolu Agency.
Asserting NATO's determination to support Ukraine, Rutte indicated that Europe would adequately fund military supplies to enhance Ukraine's negotiating position in any upcoming peace talks. He noted that these supplies would not be limited to defensive capabilities but would include offensive measures as well, stating there are "all kinds of weapons" being coordinated between NATO and Ukrainian forces, according to TRT Global and Reuters.
Concerns arose among US senators regarding the timeline provided to Russia; Senator Thom Tillis expressed apprehension that Putin may utilize the 50-day window to fortify his position. "No matter what you do over the next 50 days, any of your gains are off the table," he remarked, emphasizing the urgency of the situation, according to India Times and Anadolu Agency.
