The United Kingdom has announced the lifting of a five-year ban on Pakistani airlines, allowing them to apply for flights to the UK again, according to the British High Commission in Islamabad. This decision was reached after the UK Air Safety Committee concluded that security improvements had been made in Pakistani aviation, aligning it with international safety standards. The ban was first imposed in June 2020 following a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of 97 people, which raised concerns over pilot licensing and airline safety practices, according to Dawn, TRTGlobal, and Al Jazeera.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the lifting of the ban as a significant positive development for Pakistan, highlighting its potential to ease travel for more than 1.6 million people of Pakistani heritage living in the UK, which could enhance trade relations. The move follows recent improvements in aviation standards and comes on the heels of the European Union lifting its ban on Pakistani airlines earlier this year, establishing a trend of restoring international operations for the nation’s carriers, according to Dawn and TRTGlobal.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is preparing to resume services to the UK, particularly on the Islamabad-Manchester route, reportedly planning an initial offering of three weekly flights. Industry insiders speculate the resumption could greatly benefit PIA, which incurred estimated losses of around 40 billion rupees ($144 million) annually due to the ban. PIA's reopening routes to the UK aligns with broader efforts to privatize the airline, which has struggled with financial and operational challenges, as indicated by multiple sources, including Dawn, TRTGlobal, and Al Jazeera.
The lifting of the ban is part of a broader strategy by the Pakistani government to restore confidence in its national carrier while undertaking initiatives to improve PIA's operations and explore privatization options. Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has emphasized that regaining all services would enhance PIA's market value in advance of its sale process, which has garnered interest from multiple bidding groups aiming to acquire a stake in the airline, according to Dawn, TRTGlobal, and Al Jazeera.
