Nigeria's former President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest in his hometown of Daura, Katsina state, on Tuesday. Buhari, who died at the age of 82 in a London clinic, was honored with a state burial as thousands gathered for public prayers and military tributes. His remains were flown back to Nigeria under heavy security, arriving in Katsina where he was received with solemn ceremony, including a military parade and a 21-gun salute, according to BBC and Reuters.
The state burial took place in the backyard of Buhari's family compound, where a flag-draped coffin was displayed amid chants of "Sai Baba" from supporters. The ceremony included prayers, and Buhari was laid to rest in a white shroud, honoring Islamic rites. President Bola Tinubu declared a public holiday in remembrance of the former leader, along with a seven-day national mourning period, as reported by Africanews and Al Jazeera.
Buhari, who was the country's first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in 2015, is remembered for a mixed legacy. During his presidency, he faced criticism for his handling of insecurity and economic decline, alongside efforts to combat corruption. His leadership period was marked by rising violence from groups like Boko Haram and a struggling economy, which led to widespread dissatisfaction among the populace, according to Africanews and Reuters.
