  • Constance Marten and Mark Gordon guilty of their baby's manslaughter after a lengthy trial.
  • The couple lived off-grid before the death of their newborn, Victoria.
  • Victoria's decomposed body was discovered two days after the couple's arrest.
  • Marten and Gordon denied the charges, claiming intentions to protect their child.
  • The couple faces sentencing in September 2023.

A British couple, Constance Marten, 38, from an aristocratic family, and her partner Mark Gordon, 51, were found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence following the tragic death of their newborn daughter, Victoria, while living "off-grid" in harsh conditions. This high-profile case has drawn national attention, particularly due to the couple's previous legal troubles and their desperate attempts to evade authorities, culminating in a seven-week police hunt. Prosecutors highlighted their reckless behavior, which directly led to Victoria's death from exposure or smothering while co-sleeping in freezing temperatures inside a tent, according to South China Morning Post, CBS News, BBC, and Dawn.

The couple had previously faced charges that included child cruelty and concealing the birth of a child. Their trial this year came after another jury could not reach a verdict for the manslaughter charge in 2022. Marten and Gordon had made a conscious decision to evade care authorities after their four older children were taken into care, as revealed during the trial. They were discovered by police after offering evidence of a recent birth at their burned-out vehicle, leading to their arrest in late February 2023, according to South China Morning Post and CBS News.
