Since the end of May, nearly 800 Palestinians have been killed while attempting to access aid in Gaza, predominantly near the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) locations, according to the UN. Of these fatalities, over 615 were recorded in the vicinity of GHF sites, with additional deaths occurring en route to aid convoys operated by various organizations, including the UN. The situation has escalated amid intense violence in the region, characterized as a "graveyard of children and starving people" by the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini. He stated, "Under our watch, Gaza has become the graveyard of children [and] starving people" according to Channel News Asia, Al Jazeera, Dawn, and ABC News.
The blockade has led to dire humanitarian conditions, with the Government Media Office in Gaza reporting that over 650,000 children are at risk of severe malnutrition. "Starvation is now killing what bombs have not," they stated, further highlighting that 67 children have died of hunger since October 2023. As many as 1.25 million residents face catastrophic hunger as Israeli forces continue to block essential supplies, demonstrating a systematic approach to sustaining this humanitarian crisis according to AA and TRT World.
Amid this turmoil, Israeli military actions have reportedly led to the deaths of additional civilians. On July 12, at least 30 individuals were killed near a GHF site while waiting for aid, with reports indicating that Israeli forces directly targeted aid seekers. Medical staff have described the aid distribution sites as "human slaughterhouses" due to the lethal consequences of the conflict. There are also ongoing concerns raised by organizations regarding access to medical care as hospitals are running critically low on supplies, further exacerbating the already grim situation in Gaza, reported by Al Jazeera and Al Jazeera.
The complexity of the situation is underscored by the widespread displacement of the population amidst ongoing military operations. Many are forced to risk their lives to access the sole functioning distribution points, where the Israeli military has been reported to fire upon crowds. Medical sources report that the combination of bombardments, lack of supplies, and ongoing militia actions have created one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history, as addressed by UN and humanitarian agencies, according to Channel News Asia, Dawn, and ABC News.
