Walmart is recalling approximately 850,000 stainless steel water bottles due to a defect in the lid that can cause it to “forcefully eject,” which has resulted in serious injuries, including permanent vision loss for two individuals. These safety hazards were detailed in a notice from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) published on July 10. Consumers are advised to cease use immediately and can seek refunds through Walmart's stores or website, according to CBS News and HuffPost.
The Ozark Trail 64 oz Stainless Steel Insulated Water Bottles have been available for sale at Walmart locations nationwide since 2017. According to the CPSC, the issue may occur when users attempt to open the bottles that have stored food, carbonated beverages, or perishable drinks, such as milk or juice, prompting the lid to eject violently. As of the recall announcement, Walmart has documented three incidents in which consumers were injured, two of whom suffered permanent vision loss, as reported by HuffPost and SFGate.
The affected bottles can be identified by model number 83-662, which is not printed on the product itself. These bottles feature a silver stainless-steel base with a black one-piece screwcap lid. Additionally, they are engraved with the Ozark Trail logo. Walmart has yet to provide further comment on the situation, which has raised significant concern regarding consumer safety, according to HuffPost and SFGate.
