The Greek culture ministry announced the temporary closure of the Acropolis as a heatwave grips Greece, with temperatures reaching 42°C (107°F) in some areas. This closure, which occurred from 1 PM to 5 PM local time, aims to protect the safety of both workers and visitors amid the ongoing extreme conditions, according to Le Monde.
This heatwave, which began on Sunday, marks the second instance of extreme weather affecting Greece since late June. Meteorologists forecasted daily highs near 38°C in Athens and similar extreme weather across much of the country. The 2,500-year-old Acropolis typically attracts tens of thousands of visitors daily, and its closure is intended to prevent heat-related health risks, as reported by BBC, India Times, and Reuters.
