TikTok is in the process of developing a new version of its app specifically for the U.S. market, set to launch on September 5, as part of efforts surrounding its expected sale to a consortium of American investors, according to Reuters, Dawn, and SCMP.
U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that talks with China about a TikTok deal would commence soon, as he stated the U.S. "pretty much" has a deal in place for the short-video app's sale (Reuters, India Times).
To comply with U.S. regulations, the new app will necessitate downloading a fresh version; the current app is scheduled to work until March 2026 but will be removed from app stores when the new version launches (India Times, Africa News).
A deal under negotiation aims to relieve U.S. national security concerns, with potential bidders including Oracle and a group led by billionaire Frank McCourt offering $20 billion for TikTok's operations in the U.S. (Africa News, SCMP).
