  • Two French nationals charged with spying for Israel after three years of detention in Iran.
  • France's Foreign Minister calls the charges "unjustified and unfounded."
  • President Macron threatens retaliation if Iran does not release the detainees.
  • All charges could lead to the death penalty for the accused.
  • The couple's families raise concerns about their health following recent bombings near their prison.

Two French citizens, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, detained in Iran for over three years, have been charged with "spying" for Israel's intelligence agency Mossad, along with conspiracy to overthrow the regime and "corruption on Earth." These charges, which could lead to the death penalty, were revealed by diplomatic and family sources, although Iran has yet to confirm them officially, according to Le Monde and India Times.

French officials, including Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, have condemned the allegations as "unjustified and unfounded," emphasizing that Iran has not formally notified France of the charges. Barrot has demanded the "immediate, unconditional release" of the couple, who were arrested in May 2022 during a trip to Iran and initially held in the notorious Evin Prison, according to Africanews and Le Monde.

President Emmanuel Macron has referred to the new charges as a "provocation towards France," and has warned of "retaliatory measures" if Iran persists with the allegations. Macron plans to discuss the situation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with an emphasis on the priority of securing Kohler and Paris's release, as reported by India Times and Africanews.

Concerns for Kohler and Paris's health have intensified following recent Israeli airstrikes near their prison, prompting their families to demand proof of their well-being. Their current location is unknown after being moved from Evin Prison. Kohler's sister expressed deep worry about their psychological state amid these traumatic events, according to Africanews and Le Monde.
