Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new division called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), focusing on the development of "personal superintelligence for everyone." This initiative includes the reorganization of Meta's artificial intelligence efforts and is headed by Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who was recently brought on board following Meta's $14.3 billion investment in his data-labeling startup, as reported by Business Insider and Reuters.
The MSL will also feature former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman as co-lead, focusing on AI products and research. Zuckerberg's ambitious vision reflects a shift following setbacks such as a poor reception for the Llama 4 model and a talent exodus toward competitors like Google and OpenAI. Zuckerberg stated in an internal memo, "As the pace of AI progress accelerates, developing superintelligence is coming into sight," highlighting his commitment to leading in this technology, according to India Times.
Zuckerberg's reorganization includes a notable 11 new hires from major AI entities, including OpenAI and Google, emphasizing an aggressive approach to reinforcing Meta's talent pool. Among these are researchers who have contributed significantly to projects at renowned tech companies. This strategy is aimed at steering Meta back into contention in the AI landscape, as confirmed by reports from Channel News Asia and India Times.
Additionally, the MSL aims to fast-track the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI) and develop revenue-generating products, including enhanced AI applications and smart glasses, as highlighted in various reports citing the ambitious efforts to outpace other tech giants in AI innovation. Zuckerberg's view is that Meta possesses unique advantages, positioning the company to deliver superintelligence more effectively than smaller competitors, according to Reuters and Business Insider.
