  • Warren Buffett donates $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock, the largest donation in nearly two decades.
  • Total charitable contributions from Buffett exceed $60 billion following this donation.
  • The recipient organizations include the Gates Foundation and several family-run charities.

Warren Buffett has made a significant philanthropic gesture by donating $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway stock, marking his largest annual donation since he started giving away his fortune nearly two decades ago. This donation consists of about 12.36 million shares of Berkshire Class B, directed primarily toward the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which will receive 9.43 million shares, while four family charities will also benefit from the donation, according to Reuters, Channel News Asia, and India Times.

Buffett's donation boosts his total charitable giving to well over $60 billion. This includes substantial contributions to the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, which will receive 943,384 shares, as well as 660,366 shares each for three other charitable foundations led by his children: the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation, according to CBS News and Reuters.

Before making this latest donation, Buffett was recognized as the fifth-richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of $152 billion, according to Forbes. Following the donation, he is projected to rank sixth, surpassing his previous year's donation of $5.3 billion, as noted by Channel News Asia and India Times.

Buffett assured that he does not plan to sell any of his Berkshire shares and has previously stated that donations to the Gates Foundation will cease upon his death. He also updated his will last year to allocate 99.5% of his estate for philanthropic purposes, overseen by his children, according to CBS News and India Times.
