French prosecutors have charged a British citizen with multiple offenses, including money laundering and identity theft, due to his alleged involvement in a disturbing staged wedding ceremony at Disneyland Paris. The man, who has not been publicly named, is reported to have organized the event where he played the role of the groom to a nine-year-old Ukrainian girl, according to Indiatimes and South China Morning Post.
The event, described by prosecutors as a fictitious ceremony, was orchestrated ahead of public opening hours for an estimated cost of €130,000 (about US$151,000). The man is also accused of using false documents to secure the venue and is wanted in the UK for violating terms set by the sex offenders register, as detailed by Le Monde and BBC.
Upon police intervention, it became clear that the ceremony was intended to be filmed privately, and included hired participants, among them approximately 100 French extras who were misled about the nature of the event. Witness accounts reveal shock among participants when they discovered the bride was a child, highlighting significant ethical breaches in this setup, as noted by Indiatimes and South China Morning Post.
Despite the bizarre circumstances, authorities have stated that the Ukrainian girl was not a victim of any physical or sexual violence during the event. The Meaux prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier confirmed that the child had not been coerced into participating, contrasting with the troubling nature of the event itself, as highlighted by Le Monde, BBC, and Indiatimes.
