  • Rapper Mo Chara of Kneecap faces a terrorism charge for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a concert.
  • Hundreds of supporters gathered outside Westminster Magistrates Court to protest the charges.
  • Kneecap denies the allegations, calling it political policing aimed at silencing their message.
  • The prosecution clarified that the case concerns the flag display, not the group's political opinions.
  • The next court hearing is scheduled for August 20.

Kneecap rapper Liam O'Hanna, known as Mo Chara, appeared in Westminster Magistrates Court in London, facing a terrorism-related charge for allegedly waving a Hezbollah flag during a concert in November 2024. The rapper, 27, was charged under the UK's Terrorism Act, which criminalizes public displays suggesting support for banned organizations. O'Hanna's team asserts that the flag was thrown on stage by an audience member, asserting that the charges aim to silence their voice, according to Reuters, BBC, Al Jazeera, and India Times.

Outside the court, hundreds rallied in support of O'Hanna, including musicians and Northern Irish politicians. Chants of "Free Palestine" and "Free Mo Chara" echoed as supporters displayed flags while denouncing the charges against him. Kneecap stated that this could be perceived as an attempt to stifle political expression through their artistic platforms, reflecting their consistent criticism of Israel's actions in Gaza, according to Reuters, BBC, Al Jazeera, and India Times.

The prosecution, while asserting the seriousness of the allegations, made it clear that the case focuses specifically on the alleged display of the Hezbollah flag and not on the political commentary or opinions expressed by the rapper or the group. "He is well within his rights to voice his opinions and his solidarity," prosecuting attorney Michael Bisgrove noted in court. The hearing was brief, primarily concerning the confirmation of O’Hanna’s personal details, with the next court date set for August 20, according to Reuters, BBC, Al Jazeera, and India Times.

Kneecap, which expresses political and social messages through their music, was formed in 2017 and has built a reputation for blending Irish language and contemporary hip-hop. They have been celebrated and criticized for their provocative content. Their previous successes include a film that received multiple awards, gaining international visibility in the music industry, according to Reuters, BBC, Al Jazeera, and India Times.
