Iran Declares US Nuclear Talks 'Meaningless' After Israeli Attacks; Scheduled Meeting Cancelled

Credited from: INDIATIMES

  • Iran calls US nuclear talks 'meaningless' post-Israeli military strikes.
  • Sixth round of negotiations scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled.
  • Trump suggests room for agreement despite Iranian allegations.
  • Israel's attacks claim lives of senior Iranian officials and military commanders.

Iran has announced that its anticipated nuclear talks with the United States are "meaningless," following Israel's largest-ever military strike against Iranian territory. Tehran's foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated, "You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran's territory," indicating their stance on the recent Israeli aggressions. Iranian officials have accused Washington of complicity in these attacks, a claim which the US denies, urging Iran at a UN Security Council meeting to negotiate over its nuclear program, according to Channel News Asia and Reuters.

The planned sixth round of talks, scheduled for Sunday in Muscat, Oman, has now been cancelled due to the escalating conflict. Oman's Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, confirmed the cancellation, emphasizing that "diplomacy and dialogue remain the only pathway to lasting peace." Iranian leadership has indicated they will not engage in negotiations while under attack, pushing the future of such dialogues into uncertainty, as noted by reports from India Times and Reuters.

Trump's administration claimed knowledge of the impending Israeli strikes and continues to express hope for renewed negotiations. Trump indicated that Iranian leaders could negotiate a deal, advising them to act swiftly to avoid further destruction. "Two months ago I gave Iran a 60-day ultimatum to 'make a deal'. Today is day 61... Now they have, perhaps, a second chance!" he stated on his platform Truth Social, suggesting an opportunity for Iran to halt hostilities through diplomacy, reported by Al Jazeera and The Hill.

While the strikes have reportedly targeted military and nuclear facilities, resulting in casualties among high-ranking Iranian personnel, Iran's response includes missile and drone strikes aimed at Israel. These escalatory measures highlight the growing tension in the region. Iran continues to assert that its nuclear program is strictly for civilian purposes, rejecting allegations of weapon development, according to India Times and The Jakarta Post.
