  • Ukraine and Russia conducted a fifth exchange of bodies amid ongoing conflict.
  • A total of 6,060 bodies of Ukrainian soldiers were handed over by Russia.
  • Russia reported only receiving 78 Russian soldiers' bodies in return.

Ukraine and Russia announced the completion of their fifth POW and body exchange, an effort that follows agreements made during talks in Istanbul. Russia transferred 1,248 Ukrainian servicemen's bodies, while Ukraine handed over 51 Russian soldiers' remains, as reported by both the Russian Defence Ministry and Ukrainian officials, highlighting increasing coordination over the humanitarian concerns amid the ongoing war, according to Reuters and AA.

Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that "we have managed to bring back over 6,000 bodies" since the agreement was established, emphasizing the humanitarian aspect of these exchanges. Both sides agreed to also focus on sick and heavily wounded prisoners as described in their Istanbul talks held earlier this month, according to Dawn and TRT.

Despite the progress in body exchanges, Russian authorities asserted that they have not received any significant returns of their own servicemen's remains, which they claim is a breach of the agreement made in Istanbul. Ukrainian officials have not provided details about whether any bodies have been reciprocated to Russia, as suggested by Channel News Asia and India Times.

Following the exchanges, both countries are still navigating the complexities of war logistics, with Ukraine's population remaining hopeful for prisoner repatriations amidst concerns over military aid in light of geopolitical shifts. The ongoing humanitarian efforts are critically important as highlighted by Umerov, who remarked on the delicate processes involved in identifying returned bodies, noting that this ensures families receive closure, according to Reuters and TRT Global.
