  • Foxconn exported 97% of iPhones from India to the US between March and May 2025
  • Apple's strategy aims to bypass high US tariffs on Chinese products
  • Indian shipments have increased, with $4.4 billion worth of iPhones sent in just five months
  • President Trump has criticized Apple's production moves in India
  • Experts predict India-made iPhones could constitute 25-30% of global shipments in 2025

According to customs data, nearly all iPhones exported by Foxconn from India were sent to the United States between March and May 2025, marking a substantial shift from the 2024 average of 50%. This dramatic increase, with 97% of the $3.2 billion worth of exports directed to the US, highlights Apple’s efforts to circumvent the soaring tariffs imposed on China, as first reported by Reuters and South China Morning Post.

Foxconn's shipments to the US in May 2025 alone were valued at nearly $1 billion, just shy of the record $1.3 billion reported in March. This shift indicates a realignment of Apple's production strategy as it moves closer to meeting US market demands while avoiding hefty tariffs impacting goods coming from China, according to India Times and Reuters.

The response from US President Donald Trump has been stark, expressing disapproval over Apple's production shifts to India. "We are not interested in you building in India," he stated, reflecting the ongoing tensions over trade policies affecting not just Apple but also other companies like Samsung. The baseline tariff for India stands at 10%, comparatively lower than the looming 55% on Chinese imports, thereby making Indian production more attractive, as highlighted by South China Morning Post and India Times.

Financially, Foxconn has shipped over $4.4 billion worth of iPhones to the US in the first five months of this year, already surpassing the total for the entire year of 2024. Additionally, analysts expect that iPhones manufactured in India could account for 25% to 30% of global shipments by 2025, an increase from 18% in 2024, indicating significant growth in Apple's Indian production capabilities, as reported by Reuters, South China Morning Post, and India Times.
