A group of approximately ten French customers with vehicle leases on Teslas is suing the automaker, alleging that CEO Elon Musk's political activities have transformed their vehicles into "extreme-right" symbols. They are seeking to have their lease contracts terminated by the Paris commercial court, claiming "direct and concrete" damage from this association, according to Bangkok Post, Newsweek, and Le Monde.
The lawsuit comes amid a significant drop in Tesla sales in the European Union, which have nearly halved since the beginning of the year. The decline is attributed to Musk's political activities, including his public alignments with various far-right ideologies. These associations have led to stigmatization of Tesla owners, making it difficult for them to enjoy their cars, as detailed by the GKA law firm representing the plaintiffs, according to Bangkok Post and Le Monde.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs have characterized Tesla vehicles as strong political symbols since Musk's actions and comments contribute to their perception as "veritable extreme-right 'totems.'" Furthermore, some Tesla owners have resorted to placing stickers on their cars stating, "I bought this before Elon went crazy," indicating their discontent with the current situation. Legal representatives assert that Musk's political stances have disrupted the peaceful enjoyment of their vehicles, according to Newsweek and Le Monde.
