Nintendo reported that it sold more than 3.5 million Switch 2 units within the first four days of its launch, making it the company's fastest-selling gaming console to date. This strong performance places the company on track to meet its forecast of 15 million Switch 2 sales by March 2026, as stated by Doug Bowser, Nintendo's President and COO, who highlighted the global enthusiasm for the device as an upgrade for both home and portable gaming, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.
The Switch 2's impressive start is attributed, in part, to its lineup of compelling launch titles, particularly the eagerly anticipated "Mario Kart World." In comparison, the original Nintendo Switch sold 2.7 million units in its first month after launching in 2017, showcasing a nearly 30% increase in early sales for the Switch 2. The updated console, which launched on June 5, retains similar features to its predecessor while introducing enhancements such as a larger screen and improved graphics, according to ABC News and South China Morning Post.
In addition to enhanced capabilities, the Switch 2 features innovative controllers and new online features such as voice and video chat, further broadening its appeal. Priced at $449.99, it positions itself higher than the original Switch, which may impact its long-term sales momentum. Analysts note the challenges Nintendo faces, including consumer acceptance of the higher price in light of US trade tariffs, but the company remains optimistic, according to India Times and South China Morning Post.
