Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced a curfew for downtown Los Angeles to address ongoing protests against immigration raids. The curfew will take effect from 8 PM to 6 AM in a one-square-mile area, which includes parts affected by looting and vandalism, according to CBS News and Los Angeles Times.
The protests, sparked by recent federal immigration raids, have resulted in nearly 200 arrests and extensive property damage. Mayor Bass emphasized the need for the curfew to "stop the vandalism, to stop the looting," following reports of at least 23 businesses being looted during protests on Monday night, according to India Times and Al Jazeera.
Despite the curfew and local emergency declaration, protests have continued, with demonstrators asserting their right to protest against what they see as unjust immigration policies. The deployment of California National Guard troops and U.S. Marines by President Trump has drawn criticism from state officials, stating that it was done without the governor's consent, as reported by CBS News and India Times.
