An overland aid convoy consisting of 12 buses and 100 private cars has successfully crossed into Libya, aiming to raise awareness about the severe Israeli siege on Gaza. The convoy, composed of more than 1,000 activists from North Africa, set off from Tunisia’s capital and is making its way toward the blockaded enclave of Gaza, with plans to reach the city of Rafah by Thursday. The convoy has garnered support from Libyans who lined the streets, offering supplies such as food and water, according to AA and TRT Global.
The convoy's journey is particularly significant in light of heightened tensions, as Israel continues its military campaign against Gaza that began in October 2023. Reports indicate that this offensive has resulted in nearly 55,000 Palestinian fatalities, predominantly among women and children. Aid agencies are warning of famine conditions affecting Gaza’s approximately 2.4 million residents due to ongoing blockade measures, according to AA and SCMP.
Organizers have articulated that while they do not expect to breach the heavily fortified borders of Gaza, their initiative serves as a powerful statement of solidarity with the besieged population. This effort comes amidst recent incidents where Israel has intercepted aid ships bound for Gaza, further emphasizing the dire situation in the region, as reported by AA and TRT Global.
