Five leaders of the far-right Proud Boys have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government, seeking $100 million in damages, claiming their constitutional rights were violated during their prosecution related to the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. The suit was filed in Florida and contends that the FBI and federal prosecutors were politically biased against them, targeting them for their support of former President Donald Trump, according to Reuters, BBC, and India Times.
The plaintiffs include Henry "Enrique" Tarrio, who was sentenced to 22 years after being convicted of seditious conspiracy and multiple other charges, making it the longest sentence among his co-defendants. Other leaders involved in the lawsuit, such as Joseph Biggs, Ethan Nordean, Zachary Rehl, and Dominic Pezzola, also received prison terms after being found guilty of plotting or participating in the riots aimed at obstructing Congress from certifying Joe Biden's electoral victory, according to Reuters, BBC, and India Times.
The lawsuit claims that the prosecution was marked by "egregious and systemic abuse of the legal system," accusing the involved agents of witness intimidation and evidence tampering. The leaders assert that their legal troubles stemmed from a corrupt and politically motivated agenda aimed at punishing allies of Trump. The suit targets the Department of Justice, currently led by Attorney General Pam Bondi, under the Trump administration, according to Reuters, BBC, and India Times.
