A senior official from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and three employees from the event management company DNA Entertainment have been arrested by police in Bengaluru. This action follows a tragic stampede that occurred during RCB’s IPL victory parade, which resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to at least 75 others, according to Indiatimes, Channel News Asia, Reuters, and BBC.
The stampede occurred as fans surged outside Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the celebrations were set to take place, overwhelming security measures. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated, "Prima facie, it appears there was negligence and apathy on the part of the organisers," raising concerns over inadequate crowd control, according to Indiatimes and BBC.
In response to the incident, over 200,000 fans gathered, far exceeding police expectations, as the venue's official capacity is only 32,000. The event was promoted on RCB's social media, further igniting fan frenzy, which local authorities failed to anticipate, according to Channel News Asia, Reuters, and BBC.
Furthermore, five police officers, including the police chief of Bengaluru, have been suspended due to negligence, and a special investigation team is now leading the inquiry into the events leading up to the stampede, as reported by Reuters and Indiatimes.
