Malaysian authorities have confirmed the identification of the body found in a lift shaft as that of British backpacker Jordan Johnson-Doyle, 25, who had been missing since May 27. He was last seen at a bar in the upscale Bangsar suburb of Kuala Lumpur, which prompted a police investigation and extensive search efforts by his family, according to SCMP, India Times, and Channel News Asia.
On June 5, police stated that the body was discovered lying in a lift shaft at a construction site, approximately 1 km from where Johnson-Doyle was last seen. Fire and rescue services were involved in recovering the body, which has been sent for postmortem examination, as noted by Kuala Lumpur police chief Rusdi Mohd Isa, according to India Times and Channel News Asia.
Authorities determined that Johnson-Doyle died from a chest injury sustained from a fall, with no signs of foul play at the scene. The case is classified as a sudden death report. His uncle identified the body based on a distinctive tattoo, as confirmed by Brickfields district police chief Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood, according to SCMP, India Times, and Channel News Asia.
Johnson-Doyle's family, who traveled to Malaysia to aid in the search, expressed distress over the situation; his mother, Leanne Burnett, mentioned in a statement how heart-wrenching the ordeal has been for them, according to India Times and Channel News Asia.
