The FBI arrested 32-year-old Daniel Park at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport on Tuesday night in connection with the May 17 explosion at the American Reproductive Centers fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California. The arrest follows an investigation into an attack that law enforcement officials have characterized as a targeted act of terrorism, resulting in one death and multiple injuries, according to HuffPost, Newsweek, and SFGate.
Park's arrest is linked to his alleged role in supplying Guy Edward Bartkus, the deceased bomber, with nearly 200 pounds of ammonium nitrate, a substance commonly used in homemade explosives. Bartkus detonated the bomb outside the clinic, which offers services like in vitro fertilization. He was characterized as having "nihilistic ideations" and was believed to have targeted the clinic intentionally, according to India Times and New York Times.
The investigation revealed that Park and Bartkus were involved in discussions online related to their intentions, and both are associated with the anti-natalist movement, which opposes childbirth and population growth. Following the bombing, Park attempted to flee internationally but was detained and later sent back to the U.S. for arrest, as reported by BBC and HuffPost.
During a recent press conference, U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli stated that Bartkus's actions were an intentional act of terror, indicating the potential for wider implications of Park’s involvement. The magnitude of the explosion has led the FBI to refer to it as possibly the "largest bombing scene" in the region's recent history, highlighting the significant destruction caused, which affected multiple adjacent buildings, according to Newsweek and India Times.
