A small Piper PA-32 aircraft crashed into the Long Island Sound around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday morning, shortly after taking off from Bridgeport, Connecticut. The incident occurred near the Thimble Islands, as the plane attempted to divert for an emergency landing at Tweed New Haven Airport but was unable to do so in time, according to ABC News, India Times, and The Hill.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded quickly to the scene, sending a 45-foot boat after air traffic control notified them of the crash. The two occupants, a 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, were fortunately able to escape the sinking aircraft and were found wearing life jackets. They were subsequently rescued, treated for minor injuries and hypothermia, and transported to a nearby hospital, as reported by ABC News, India Times, and The Hill.
Local fire officials arrived shortly after the Coast Guard and noted that the plane was fully submerged by the time they reached the crash site. The FAA has initiated an investigation into the actions leading up to the crash, according to ABC News, India Times, and The Hill.
