Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, has announced a commitment to spend the majority of his estimated $200 billion fortune on enhancing health and education services in Africa over the next 20 years. During a speech at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he stated, "I recently made a commitment that my wealth will be given away over the next 20 years. The majority of that funding will be spent on helping you address challenges here in Africa," according to CBS News and BBC.

Gates emphasized the importance of investing in mothers and young children, stating that improved maternal health significantly impacts child well-being. He explained, "What we've learned is that helping the mother be healthy and have great nutrition before she gets pregnant... delivers the strongest results," as quoted by India Times. His remarks resonated with Mozambique's former First Lady Graça Machel, who appreciated the announcement during a "moment of crisis" for the continent, according to AllAfrica.

Moreover, Gates issued a call to Africa's youth to leverage technological advancements to improve healthcare systems, particularly through the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI). "Africa largely skipped traditional banking... now you have a chance, as you build your next generation healthcare systems, to think about how AI is built into that," he stated, pointing out Rwanda's innovative use of AI-enabled ultrasounds for high-risk pregnancy detection, according to Africa News and India Times.

Planning for the future, Gates mentioned that the Gates Foundation will eventually "sunset" operations by 2045, ensuring that its mission is completed to benefit those in need. Gates insists that his philanthropic work is an investment for future prosperity, stating, "This is not charity. It’s an investment in Africa’s future," according to India Times and BBC.
