  • LinkedIn layoffs total 281 positions across various locations in California.
  • The majority of cuts affected software engineering roles, particularly in Mountain View.
  • This move is part of a broader trend in the tech industry as companies adjust workforce in response to AI advances.
  • Microsoft, LinkedIn’s parent company, has also announced major layoffs affecting thousands of employees.
  • The layoffs reflect ongoing changes in the tech landscape as companies strive for efficiency and agility.

LinkedIn has officially announced the termination of 281 employees across California, according to a WARN notice filed with state officials. This reduction in workforce particularly impacts software engineering roles, with significant cuts in Mountain View (159 positions), followed by San Francisco (60), Sunnyvale (23), and smaller numbers in Carpinteria and among remote workers based in California. The decision was disclosed to the affected employees on May 13, amid ongoing job cuts at parent company Microsoft, which recently revealed plans to reduce its overall staff by around 6,000 employees, representing a 3% workforce cut, according to SFGATE, India Times, and LATimes.

The layoffs at LinkedIn include a significant number of software engineers, with at least 71 positions being eliminated in Mountain View alone, spanning various seniority levels. The WARN filing indicates that other roles such as deal desk strategists, product managers, and designers are also affected. There has been no official communication explaining the rationale behind these layoffs, particularly communication from LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky, who previously addressed earlier job cuts in 2023, as reported by SFGATE and India Times.

These job cuts at LinkedIn come amid a continuing trend in the tech industry, with major companies like Meta, Google, and Autodesk also reporting job reductions. With advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) leading to increased automation in software development, Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, previously noted that AI now writes up to 30% of the company's code, which has raised concerns about the future of various engineering roles within tech companies. The layoff announcements reflect a broader strategy by companies to streamline operations as competitive pressures mount, according to LATimes and India Times.

Despite the substantial layoffs, LinkedIn's website states it has approximately 18,400 employees globally and continues to operate multiple offices. However, the current situation raises concerns about LinkedIn's growth trajectory and its ability to adapt to new market conditions. Recent indications from Microsoft show that LinkedIn has been one of its slower-growing revenue segments, leading to speculation about future rounds of layoffs as companies adapt to new technological developments, according to SFGATE, India Times, and LATimes.
