The New York Times Company revealed on Thursday that it has entered into a licensing agreement with Amazon, allowing the tech giant to utilize its editorial content for artificial intelligence platforms. This marks the first instance of The Times agreeing to a generative AI licensing deal, as it had previously resisted allowing its content to be exploited in the AI space. The agreement will enable Amazon to incorporate Times content into various customer experiences, particularly its Alexa voice assistant, and it will aid in training Amazon's proprietary AI models, according to The New York Times, Le Monde, and The Jakarta Post.
The financial terms of this deal were not disclosed. However, Meredith Kopit Levien, the chief executive of The Times, expressed that the agreement aligns with the organization's commitment to ensuring "high-quality journalism is worth paying for." This move follows a legal battle against OpenAI, where The Times accused it of copyright infringement for using its content without compensation to develop the generative chatbot ChatGPT, according to The New York Times and Le Monde.
