Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1.1 million vehicles across multiple models due to a software glitch affecting the rearview camera displays. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates that the issue may result in the rearview image freezing or failing to display when the vehicle is in reverse, potentially increasing the risk of crashes. This recall, affecting 1,075,299 vehicles, specifically addresses models including the 2021-2024 F-150 and 2022-2025 Transit, among others, according to CBS News, Newsweek, and India Times.
The rearview camera issue began when complaints were received regarding the 2021-2023 F-150, leading engineers to trace the defect back to the infotainment system's software. Ford has acknowledged one report of a minor crash related to this defect but has not reported any injuries thus far. The models affected include various Ford and Lincoln vehicles, as detailed in the recall report CBS News, Newsweek, and India Times.
To address the software issue, Ford will provide a free update, which can be done either via an over-the-air (OTA) installation or at authorized dealerships. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting on June 16, 2025, and a follow-up will be issued once the fix is available later in the year. Customers can contact Ford customer service or NHTSA for further information regarding the recall CBS News, Newsweek, and India Times.
This recall follows a substantial $165 million penalty Ford incurred in 2023 for previous delays in addressing rearview camera issues, pointing to ongoing challenges the automaker faces with vehicle technology and safety compliance, as reported by CBS News, Newsweek, and India Times.
