  • Rugby Australia suggests sudden-death extra time for drawn Lions matches.
  • The proposal comes after the 2017 series ended in a controversial draw.
  • Fans' experience is a significant focus of the proposed changes.
  • 20-minute red card rule will also apply in the series.
  • Lions to face Argentina before their tour of Australia begins in July.

Rugby Australia chief Phil Waugh has revealed that the board of the British & Irish Lions is considering a proposal for sudden-death extra time if the deciding third Test in the upcoming series ends in a draw. This proposal arises in the wake of the 2017 series, which concluded in an unsatisfying 15-15 draw with New Zealand, termed by Lions' captain Sam Warburton as "a bit of an anticlimax" for the players, according to Channel News Asia, Reuters, and BBC.

During discussions in London, Waugh suggested that a 'golden point' mechanism—where the first team to score wins—could significantly enhance the spectator experience. He emphasized that, "Our preference... is about putting the fans at the centre of everything we're doing," underlining the potential appeal of such an approach for fan engagement, as stated in Channel News Asia, Reuters, and BBC.

Waugh also confirmed that both sides have agreed to implement the 20-minute red card rule, which allows a team to replace a red-carded player after 20 minutes. This rule has previously been trialed in the Six Nations and has shown to add excitement to the games, as observed in statements by Waugh regarding its significant support, according to Channel News Asia, Reuters, and BBC.

The Lions are scheduled to face Argentina for a warm-up match on June 20 before embarking on their tour of Australia, where they will engage in a series of matches including three Tests against the Wallabies starting July 19, as mentioned by Channel News Asia, Reuters, and BBC.
