Sixth Inmate from New Orleans Jail Escape Captured, Two Remain at Large

Credited from: HUFFPOST

  • Lenton Vanburen, the sixth inmate, captured in Baton Rouge after escaping a New Orleans jail.
  • Two inmates, Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves, still elude capture amid a widespread manhunt.
  • Over a dozen individuals arrested for aiding the escapees and facilitating their flight.
  • Details reveal deficiencies in jail security and potential complicity from staff members.
  • Authorities remain on high alert, issuing warnings against aiding fugitives.

A sixth man who escaped from a New Orleans jail has been captured, as announced by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. Lenton Vanburen was located in Baton Rouge on Monday, returning him to custody after a weeklong manhunt that highlighted significant security lapses at the Orleans Justice Center, where 10 inmates escaped on May 16 by breaching a wall behind a toilet. He now faces additional charges related to his escape, as do several of the other inmates who were recaptured after being initially freed, according to ABC News and CBS News.

The escape occurred when inmates yanked open a faulty cell door and climbed through the hole. Authorities discovered their absence several hours later during a headcount. As of now, two inmates remain fugitives: Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves, both considered armed and dangerous. Massey has a history of multiple escapes, and Groves was previously convicted of murder, illustrating the serious nature of the individuals still at large, reports India Times and NPR.

Over a dozen people have been arrested for allegedly aiding the escape efforts before or after the jailbreak, including a jail maintenance worker who is accused of shutting off the water supply that facilitated the inmates' escape. This worker reported he had been threatened by Massey to comply. Investigators have also apprehended individuals who assisted the escapees after their breakout, further complicating the case, according to HuffPost and Newsweek.

Local and state authorities remain vigilant, with ongoing manhunts and investigations into the jail's internal security failures causing significant public concern. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson has indicated that investigations are underway concerning staff complicity in the escape, which has raised alarms about the operational integrity of the facility. The high-profile nature of the escape has led to calls for greater accountability within the jail management, according to HuffPost and NPR.
