  • Uganda has suspended all military cooperation with Germany.
  • The decision cites the German ambassador's alleged subversive activities.
  • This diplomatic rift escalates ahead of Uganda's 2026 presidential elections.
  • Germany has long provided military support to Uganda, with trade exceeding $335 million.

Uganda has officially suspended all military cooperation with Germany, claiming that German Ambassador Matthias Schauer is engaging in “subversive activities” that threaten national security. The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) announced this decision following intelligence reports implicating the ambassador in supporting anti-government groups, specifically during a private meeting with President Museveni’s brother, where Schauer reportedly criticized the online actions of General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president's son and military chief, according to India Times and TRT Global.

The UPDF's spokesperson, Chris Magezi, indicated that the cooperation suspension will remain until the issues concerning Ambassador Schauer's alleged involvement with "hostile pseudo-political-military forces" are resolved. They further noted that this move is a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions with Germany, a nation long considered a partner providing logistical and technical support, according to Reuters and Africa News.

This suspension comes amid increasing international scrutiny over Uganda's political environment, particularly as the country approaches presidential elections in 2026. Reports indicate that the Ugandan government perceives external support for local opposition groups as interference in its domestic affairs, placing the long-standing bilateral relationship at risk, reports Africa News and Reuters.
