  • Li's visit follows renewed US-China tariff suspensions affecting trade relations.
  • Indonesia's President emphasizes the importance of ties with China for regional stability.

China’s Premier Li Qiang announced on Saturday that China and Indonesia will promote "true multilateralism" during his visit to Jakarta, the capital of Southeast Asia's largest economy. This announcement comes amidst China's heightened engagement with regional countries following significant import tariffs introduced by the United States, according to Channel News Asia, The Jakarta Post, and Dawn.

During his visit, Premier Li noted that China has strengthened its partnerships in the region since the US announced tariffs, which have since seen some delays and pauses in enforcement. Indonesia, whose largest trading partner is China, has reportedly made various concessions to the US in an effort to mitigate tariff impacts, according to Channel News Asia and The Jakarta Post.

At a business leaders' gathering later that day, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that ties between China and Indonesia are crucial for regional stability. He expressed that Indonesia regards China as a vital partner in fostering industrial and technological development. Furthermore, he commended China for standing up for the interests of developing nations and opposing "imperialism" and "colonialism," as reported by Channel News Asia, The Jakarta Post, and Dawn.

Moreover, a meeting is scheduled for Sunday where Prabowo and Li will discuss further enhancing Indonesia-China relations, as confirmed by Indonesian investment minister Rosan Roeslani. Following the Jakarta visit, Premier Li is set to attend the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit in Malaysia, as stated by Channel News Asia and The Jakarta Post.
