  • One worker was killed in an explosion aboard a sewage vessel in the Hudson River.
  • Two additional workers were injured, with one requiring hospitalization.
  • The incident is currently under investigation, with no criminal intent suspected.
  • The explosion occurred while performing work involving flames or sparks.
  • Environmental safety measures were implemented; no pollution has been reported.

On Saturday morning, an explosion on a sewage vessel transporting raw sewage resulted in the death of one city employee and injuries to two others. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the North River Wastewater Resource Recovery Facility in New York City, according to Deputy Assistant Chief David Simms of the Fire Department (nytimes, abcnews, latimes, cbsnews, and huffpost).

The deceased worker, a 59-year-old man and a long-time employee of the Department of Environmental Protection, was described by Mayor Eric Adams as “a devoted public servant” who had served the city for 33 years. The other two workers were affected, with one taken to the hospital while the other refused medical treatment after the explosion, which was reportedly linked to hot work involving flames or sparks (nytimes, abcnews, latimes, cbsnews, and huffpost).

The U.S. Coast Guard and other emergency personnel responded to the scene. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the explosion, although authorities have indicated that there is no suspicion of criminality. Additionally, responders encountered raw sewage on the deck of the vessel, which led to decontamination for the emergency workers involved (nytimes, abcnews, latimes, cbsnews, and huffpost).
