X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, experienced significant global outages over the weekend, impacting users across various countries including the United States, Pakistan, India, and several European nations. At the peak of the outages, over 25,800 incidents were reported, according to Downdetector, with users facing problems logging in and accessing notifications. This disruption follows another outage just a day prior, marking consecutive days of service interruptions, according to Channel News Asia and Reuters.

The cause of the outage has been linked to a data centre issue, reportedly stemming from a fire at X's facility in Hillsboro, Oregon, that required significant emergency services response. Users speculated that this incident was connected to the technological disruptions, which included unavailability of key features and services. The fire primarily affected a room containing batteries, though remnants of the incident appeared to impact server operations, as outlined by sources from Channel News Asia and Dawn.

In Pakistan, users reported a peak of 372 outages at 5:36 PM on Saturday, with the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) confirming that the country’s internet services remained operational and were not impacted by the outages impacting X. The PTA stated that their investigations revealed no technical issues on Pakistan’s internet gateways, reaffirming the unaffected status of other online services. This was further echoed by NetBlocks, an internet observatory confirming that the outages were global and unrelated to localized disruptions, according to Dawn and India Times.

Despite the technical failures, X management announced they were actively working to resolve ongoing issues and aimed to restore full functionality promptly. Musk stated he would be returning to work “24/7” focusing on X and related projects, emphasizing the importance of addressing the disruptions swiftly, a sentiment shared in his communications via X, as reported by Channel News Asia and Reuters.
