A man in Norway awoke on Thursday to find the huge cargo ship, the NCL Salten, aground just meters from his cabin near Trondheim. He was alerted by a neighbor after sleeping through the commotion. "The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don't like to open," said Johan Helberg, the homeowner, referring to the time he was woken up according to scmp and cbsnews.
The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. local time when Helberg's neighbor, Jostein Jorgensen, heard the sound of the ship crashing towards shore. Jorgensen quickly ran to Helberg's house and managed to contact him by phone after numerous unanswered doorbell rings. "I was sure that he was already outside," Jorgensen told TV2 according to bbc.
The NCL Salten reportedly caused damage to a heating pipe in Helberg's cabin, but he acknowledged it could have been worse had the ship hit the adjacent rocky cliff according to cbsnews. None of the 16 crew members were injured, and the cause of the grounding is under investigation, with indications that the helmsman may have been asleep at the time of the accident according to scmp and bbc.
