  • Second man charged in connection with arson linked to Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
  • Stanislav Carpiuc, a Romanian national, faces charges of conspiracy to commit arson.
  • Two other properties linked to Starmer were also targeted in separate incidents.
  • Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation due to the political implications.
  • Starmer called the incidents "an attack on all of us, on our democracy."

A second man, Stanislav Carpiuc, a Romanian national, has been charged with conspiracy to commit arson following a series of fires linked to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. He is the second individual to face charges after 21-year-old Roman Lavrynovych, a Ukrainian, was charged last week. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Carpiuc's charges pertain to three separate incidents involving properties associated with Starmer and a car fire that occurred earlier this month, according to Reuters, New York Times, and Channel News Asia.

The incidents included a fire at Starmer’s former residence in Kentish Town and another blaze at a nearby building, with police confirming that no injuries were reported. The entrance to Starmer's house was damaged in the fires, and law enforcement is treating these incidents seriously due to their implications for public safety, as highlighted by the involvement of counter-terrorism police. According to the authorities, Carpiuc was arrested at London Luton Airport before being charged in a case that is expected to examine potential terrorism connections, according to Reuters and Channel News Asia.

During the court proceedings, Carpiuc, who has lived in the UK for nine years, denied being present at the sites of the fires according to his lawyer. Starmer, who has designated these attacks as dangerous assaults on democracy, emphasized that they represent a threat to civic values and public security. This sentiment has been echoed throughout the ongoing investigation, which seeks to clarify the motives behind the actions of both accused individuals, as indicated by statements from prosecutors regarding the unexplained nature of the charges against Carpiuc, according to New York Times and Channel News Asia.
