Democratic Representative LaMonica McIver has been charged with assaulting federal law enforcement officers during a protest outside an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Newark, New Jersey, on May 9. The charges were announced by Alina Habba, the acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, who stated that McIver had “assaulted, impeded and interfered with law enforcement” during the incident, which involved other Democratic lawmakers and resulted in the arrest of Newark Mayor Ras J. McIver was participating in a congressional oversight visit alongside Baraka and her colleagues, Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez, to inspect conditions at the Delaney Hall ICE facility, which recently began operations under a controversial contract with the GEO Group. The visit turned chaotic when ICE agents blocked Baraka’s entry, leading to tensions which resulted in McIver allegedly elbowing officers and attempting to block the mayor's arrest, as reported by ABC News and CBS News.

Her attorney, Paul Fishman, criticized the charges as "spectacularly inappropriate" and claimed they were an attempt to shift blame from ICE's actions to McIver. In response to the charges, McIver publicly declared that the situation was distorted for political reasons, stating, "These charges against me are purely political — they mischaracterize and distort my actions," in a statement shared on social media.
