U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he will hold a telephone discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding efforts to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The call is scheduled for Monday at 10:00 AM Eastern Time. Trump emphasized that the focus will be on "stopping the 'bloodbath' that is killing, on average, more than 5000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week," as well as trade issues, according to Reuters and India Times.
Following his conversation with Putin, Trump plans to reach out to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and engage with various NATO members. He expressed hope that the discussions might lead to a ceasefire in the "very violent war," which he described as a tragedy that "should have never happened," as reported by Newsweek and Reuters.
Trump's plan for communication reflects increasing pressure on both leaders to find pathways to resolve hostilities, especially after recent face-to-face talks in Istanbul where Russia maintained a hardline stance towards Ukraine's territorial integrity. "Hopefully it will be a productive day," Trump added in his post, reiterating the urgency to halt the escalation of violence, according to India Times and Newsweek.
