A 25-year-old Indian tourist, known as Pramender, was sentenced to three months in jail by a Singaporean court for molesting a 12-year-old girl at Jalan Besar Swimming Complex. The incident, which occurred on March 31, involved Pramender following the girl to the toilet and sending her inappropriate messages via Instagram after accessing her account using her phone, according to Channel News Asia.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that after attempting to procure an indecent act, Pramender made several inappropriate advances towards the girl. He pleaded guilty to one charge of attempting to procure the commission of an indecent act by a child and another charge of molesting a child under 14. A third charge of trespassing was taken into account during sentencing, according to South China Morning Post and India Times.
The victim was at the swimming complex with her family when Pramender approached her, asking her to follow him into the female toilet. He reportedly hugged her and made unwanted physical contact, which left her feeling shocked and scared. After the incident, the victim's mother reported the matter to the police, leading to Pramender’s arrest just days later. The incident escalated due to Pramender's repeated and unwanted advances despite the victim's clear refusals, as noted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ashley Chin and Channel News Asia.
The court acknowledged the victim's young age and vulnerability, suggesting that the presence of her cousins possibly prevented a more serious outcome. District Judge Chay Yuen Fatt remarked on the potentially severe implications had the victim been left unprotected, supporting the need for a clear deterrent against such predatory actions. The penalties averted could have included a jail term of up to seven years for the charges brought against him, highlighting the serious legal consequences for attempting to procure the commission of an indecent act by a child, according to India Times and South China Morning Post.
