Chinese officials have firmly stated that the fentanyl crisis is primarily a problem for the United States, with responsibility to solve it lying with Washington. Lin Jian, spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, remarked that the US is "smearing and shifting blame onto China," stressing that the issue must be addressed by the US itself, not China, according to Newsweek, India Times, and Anadolu Agency.
During a press briefing, Lin noted that the imposition of US tariffs related to the fentanyl trade was unreasonable and undermined cooperative efforts between the countries. He highlighted that these tariffs were enacted even as conversations about counter-narcotics efforts continued, with the US retaining a 20% tariff on Chinese goods while delineating its broader trade negotiation strategy, highlighted by Newsweek and India Times.
Following discussions in Geneva, both parties agreed to a 90-day suspension of certain tariffs, intending to alleviate ongoing trade tensions. However, US officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, indicated that China's alleged inaction on fentanyl would maintain certain tariffs; they emphasized the need for mutual respect and cooperation in addressing the drug crisis, as reported by Anadolu Agency and India Times.
